After coaching for 3 years at the collegiate level, 15 years at the high school basketball level, attending many coaching clinics, and watching a many days of tape – this is my favorite inbound play.

I first came across it during my initial season as Head Varsity basketball coach. A rival school used it in an early season game to hit three 3-point shots and score 11 points against us.

I incorporated it into our playbook shortly after and used it with great success for the next 11 seasons. Over time we built an entire series of inbound plays around this one – counters, disguised plays, etc.

Wolverine Inbound Play

Wolverine is designed to produce a 3 point shot from the corner.

It is a Box Set:

Best 3 Point Shooter is the Inbounder

Post players are on the blocks

Remaining Perimeter players set up on the elbows of the free throw line.

The Inbounder signals the start of the play – we had our inbounder raise the basketball, many teams slap the ball:

1. Post players will curl back to the elbows to set a backscreen for the perimeter players (on their outside shoulder).
2. Perimeter players will cut off of the screen to their nearside wing
3. Inbounder will pass the ball to the ballside wing (1), then step inbounds

4. Ballside post (5) will pop out to the top of the key to receive a pass from the ballside wing (1)
5. After setting the screen, the weakside post (4) will drop back into the low post, seal her defender, and may be available for a high-low pass from the top post.

6. After passing the ball to the ballside post (5), the ballside wing (1) will downscreen for the inbounder (2). The inbounder will then cut to the ballside corner and look for a pass from the high post (5) for a 3 point shot.

7. The 5 can look to the 4 for a High-Low entry into the post, then look to the 2 in the corner (we always set up outside the 3 point line) for a 3-point shot.

8. If 2 does not shoot, 1 can screen across to bring the 4 to the ballside post, and then, depending on your offense, 5 can screen for either the 1 or 3 to bring them to the top of the key.

Jim Boeheim – Syracuse University

All Access Syracuse Basketball Practice

In this All Access look at the Syracuse University basketball program you will get an inside look at how Jim Boeheim builds the foundation for his famous 2-3 zone defense and his penetrating half court offense. Coach Boeheim initiates this series of practice sessions with simple explanations of how he organizes each practice.

The practices include warm up drills that address agility and offensive and defensive principles, schemes and drills that put Syracuse at the top of polls year in and year out.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore Jim Boeheim’s philosophy on practices and program building!

Part 1:

Get the drills you need to develop effective rotations at the top of the 2-3 Zone

Learn the 7-on-5 defensive rotation drill, the drill responsible for Syracuse’s intense rotations and their ability to cover so many offensive looks

Combine ball handling with agility ladder footwork to develop total body control

The staff starts building the famous 2-3 Zone with two defenders learning to play the top of the zone against a variety of situations. You’ll see 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills that teach the man-to-man principles that help make the Syracuse zone defense so dominating. This leads into a controlled 5-on-5 full court scrimmage in which both squads are exposed to a variety of half-court and full-court defenses.

Part 2:

Expose players to physical contact in rebounding and shooting to produce game-ready skills

Teach fundamental close-outs and defensive rotations in competitive 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and 4-on-4 drills

Get two quick hitters to use against man-to-man defense

This practice session provides unique insight into understanding defensive rotations on the weak side against scenarios such as ball side penetration and fighting through down screens. You will see a defensive drill progression focusing on the back row of the zone with proper close-out technique and the correct rotation in 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and 4-on-4 match-ups.

In an extended 5-on-5 scrimmage, Coach Boeheim works on a variety of offensive and defensive schemes to explore all options and game scenarios. The practice closes with the Orange executing a series of set plays.

Part 3:

See how to breakdown the 2-3 zone defense into position-specific drills

Learn to defend against the Pick-and-Roll in a 3-on-3 and a 4-on-4 breakdown drill

Discover the drills Syracuse uses as the building blocks of their offense

This disc begins with some valuable Q and A with the coaching staff. They answer questions about the 2-3 zone, player development, how practice evolves throughout the season and motivational tactics within the practice session.

On the court, the coaches run the players through developmental drills for their positions. The guards work on offensive tactics, while the post players continue to develop the offensive and defensive skills necessary for success. The session includes a focus on defending in the 2-3 zone versus the high screen. This essential concept is tirelessly taught to ensure the success of the Syracuse zone. Coach Boeheim puts it all together in the 5 on 5 portion of the practice where he emphasizes 2-3 zone, half-court man-to-man, and full court man-to-man run-and-jump defenses.

Part 4:

Learn a simple technique for taking away easy driving lanes to the hoop

See how to defend the short corner when playing the 2-3 zone – the weakest spot for any zone defense

Get a series of shell drills that teach players the complex 2-3 zone responsibilities step-by-step

This disc begins with a valuable discussion with assistant coach Gerry McNamara who was also part of Syracuse’s National championship team. His insight as a coach and former player adds tremendous support to understanding what the Orangemen are all about.

Moving to the court, the emphasis is on how to play the back of the 2-3 zone. This is achieved with a series of breakdown drills showing the slides and responsibilities that are key to its success.

Offensive drills are conducted showing the players how to finish when close to the basket. At the end of practice the team runs through a scouting report on how their next opponent will attack the Syracuse zone defense and what they will do to defend it.

Part 5:

Implement the high-low game out of a high screen-and-roll set up

Learn how Syracuse runs their “Outside” post move

See how Syracuse prepares for a game against a conference rival

With a big game only days away, Syracuse puts all the pieces together in this practice. This practice session is a split of individual skill work, as well as extensive, controlled 5-on-5 full court scrimmages, where you witness Coach Boeheim’s genius at work.

The individual skill drills are based on Syracuse’s offensive sets and focus on short corner power lay-ups (“cheat step”), as well as the high-low game for Syracuse’s “double fist” set. To deepen the understanding and to work on defensive skills in the 2-3 zone, the staff revisits the 5-on-3 shell drill for forwards. The team first runs through some of their offensive sets in a 5-on-0 segment before going full-court 5-on-5.

This extensive DVD set, produced by Championship Productions, includes more than five hours of basketball instruction that takes you step-by-step through a Kentucky practice.

The first practice is all about the Kentucky offense. Calipari shares his philosophy for practice planning as well as what they are accomplishing as they build their offensive system from their transition game into their Dribble Drive offense. He begins by running a 5-on-0 transition drill where he explains his transition options and what the players are looking for as they push the ball up the floor. You will learn his team ball handling drills, which leads into a progression of lay-up drills that concentrate on speed, moves and finishing with contact. Learn the key to protecting the basketball and see how Calipari stresses it in practice. Calipari continues to build their transition offense with a full court team layup drill, full court 2-man passing, 3-man full court, 3-man weave full court, 11 drill, Skip 2, 32, 33 Blood, and 44 drills. In this drill set, Calipari stresses attacking with ball quickness, staying low, and finishing plays while fueling his player’s instinct to attack.

Everything is brought together at the end of the practice with nearly 40 minutes of informative Q&A. Calipari answers questions regaring what level players have to be at to run his system, player placement for the dribble drive, his terminology, his thoughts on playing against zone defenses and much more.

NBA veteran and current assistant coach Rod Strickland then shares ball handling techniques and ball quickness drills. Strickland was a point guard in the NBA for 17 years in addition to mentoring Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans while at Memphis.

Assistant Coach John Robic, who is in his 13th year season with Coach Calipari, details spacing, player responsibilities, and base options for the Dribble Drive Offense. He also takes you through some of their big man and guard play work. The big man drills include touches, working on relocation, reading movement, sealing inside and some ball screen principles in the Dribble Drive.

The second practice presents drills, from 1-on-1 to 5-on-5, that Calipari uses to build his defensive pressure from the ground up. Learn how to incorporate the lunge, early help, back foot fakes, and close outs to assemble a disruptive defense. He also takes you through his transition defense rules and uses his full court combination drill, which starts 2-on-1 and progresses to 3-on-2, 4-on-3, 5-on-4, and finishes 5-on-5 to build the transition defense.

Using the shell drill, Calipari shows you the base responsibilities and keys to his defense, which include ball pressure, closeouts, jumping to the ball, and having good vision off the ball. He explains his 30 second “perfect stop” to stress perfection in the shell drill. He finishes the defensive practice by walking you through his unique Press Defense.

Throughout the practices Calipari provides his wisdom and basketball knowledge as he coaches and teaches his players, and provides coaching points for the drills and concepts he uses to build his system of play.

Experience what make John Calipari one of the best coaches in the country!

Ball screens are becoming a huge part of basketball and can be a successful tool for your team if they are executed properly. This ball screen DVD will give you the tools you need to install this system into your program.

In this on-court clinic presentation, Chris Mack gives you a comprehensive look at the inner workings of a successful ball screen offense.

Coach Mack will show you how a ball screen offense can:

Limit turnovers and make plays by keeping the ball in your best players hands

Force your opponent’s post players to defend away from the basket

Gain rebounding advantages, get open shots, get to the free throw line more often and create mismatches using rotations

Learn the most important concepts you must teach the dribbler and the screener: Creating separation, getting to the level of the screen, how to hold the screen and the three types of screens.

Using a 2-on-2 demonstration, Mack shows you the five defense attacks most commonly used to defend the ball screen. For each of these scenarios, Mack takes you through two ways to attack the defense and provides the ball handler and screener reads and passes.

To help you incorporate ball screens into your offense, Mack delivers ball screen plays in a 5-on-0 setting.

Using this effective ball screen offense, Coach Mack was the winningest first-year head coach in Division I in 2009-10 and the only rookie head coach to lead his team into the 2010 NCAA Tournament field.

Introduction to this defense begins with player-by-player assignments and coverage. The basic goal is to divide the court in half from basket to basket. Once the ball is on one side, the defense keeps it on that side. Ball pressure makes a big difference, keeping the offensive player from throwing skip passes and reversing the ball. To show the slides, a 5-on-5 zone shell drill is demonstrated. Huggins then moves the zone press up the floor, making it a full court attack. Once the ball is inbounds, keeping it in the box in the backcourt is important. Players away from the ball are on the line and up the line, in a direct line between the ball and the player in their area. Two methods of playing this full court trap include regular and a “speed them up” approach. Players are trapping, anticipating, or protecting the goal. Each duty is broken down into several teaching points.

Half-court defense

Rebounding

Taking care of the ball

Transition defense

Painter sets the tone of each practice by starting out with his defensive breakdowns. He dissects Purdue’s man-to-man defense with a variety of drills and exercises.

Painter’s practices include post and perimeter skill work, transition motion, secondary break, free throw work, man defense, shell work, motion offense and much more.

Painter ends each practice with a competitive drill including a rebounding drill (Rebound War), a shoot out (No Man’s Land) and a limitation drill (60 Point Drill).

In this DVD, Monson demonstrates seven unconditional techniques of man-to-man defense that you can use to build a winning team. He puts a creative twist on teaching his defense by having players connected by ropes, forcing them to move together as a unit. A huge believer in defensive transition, Monson describes the importance of getting back and setting your defense in the first five seconds of every defensive possession. He shares several drills you can use to teach the team skill of stopping easy baskets. Additional on-the-floor drills drive home Monson’s finer points of coaching defense. If you like both man-to-man and zone defenses, this DVD is ideal as it will save time, condense your drill catalog and make your team more consistent on the defensive end of the floor.

The Flex/Dive Offense is a motion-patterned offense that spreads the floor to take advantage of the defense. The Flex/Dive Offense provides structure and security for players in the half court and builds a great feel for time and score. The Flex/Dive Offense is similar to the Flex, but is less predictable. Flex cutting principles are present, but an open side and double screening action make the Flex/Dive Offense unique. The Flex/Dive Offense offers a balance between 3-point shots and “thrusts to the basket.” A set play, Crackdown, is a good entry into the Flex/Dive Offense. A key is the corner pop out and wing dive. The circle drill, 4-on-4 to 3-on-3, 4-on-4 on a block and the back door drill are excellent for developing this offense. Monson concludes with three set plays for late game situations. Monson’s philosophy, teaching points, entries, and drills for the Flex/Dive Offense provide a complete look at this exciting offense.

Considered one of the most innovative coaches in basketball today, Montgomery gives an excellent demonstration on how you can build your five-man motion offense. Beginning with screens and cutting, he uses a whole-part-whole philosophy to teach the entire offense. Montgomery demonstrates five screens, two cuts, proper floor balance and pivoting, all designed to get your players open for shots. Next, Montgomery shows the basics of a sound stack offense as well as 12 options that can take advantage of individual skills and different defensive coverages. He includes transition, his 40 and 50 series, box sets, entries into motion and the stack to help take advantage of a defensive weakness. Whether you run motion or the stack, this offensive tape can provide excellent schemes to obtain high percentage shots!

He begins with his thoughts and differences between the college and the NBA game. From there he moves into his 3-minute drill instruction. These intense practice drills work on dribble skills, different kinds of passes to make under pressure, how to be physical and go after rebounds and a 2-on-2 drill that focuses on dribbling, pivoting and passing. Montgomery shifts gears and calls on his NBA experience and shares a number of excellent out-of-bounds plays. Plays include screen-the-screener, which includes the “step-up” screen and includes many options and alterations. A counter play is “10,” which keeps the defense from cheating toward the main screening action. “One get” ends in a quick ball screen and penetration to the lane. Side out-of-bounds plays come from the stack, 1-4 high or box sets. Montgomery also demonstrates several side out-of-bounds players that can yield quick baskets.

Coach McKillop’s philosophy is simple, the “details” of coaching basketball are the foundation of success. In this basketball DVD, McKillop shares his seven keys to successful basketball and detailed demonstrations of baseline and sideline out of bounds plays. By executing special teams play, you can gain an edge on any opponent. McKillop also discusses and demonstrates how he prepares his teams for defensive out-of-bounds plays. He demonstrates strategies for using your best scorer and for gaining an advantage on the free throw line. McKillop teaches specific footwork to gain offensive rebounds from missed free throws; a great way to pick up quick baskets or give your offense another possession. Learn how to win close games from the NABC’s 2008 Coach of the Year.

Bob McKillop’s philosophy is simple, the “details” of coaching basketball are the foundation of success.

In this basketball DVD, Coach McKillop shares his seven keys to successful basketball:

Seeing

Talking

Having an act

Be down and balanced

Do the little things

Flesh-to-flesh contact

Finish everything

Learn four daily objectives McKillop uses to help teach the game: Let’s get better, have fun, play to win and make every play count; to better help him teach the game. These four objectives are controled by the coach, and if done well, will improve the learning environment in your practices.

At Davidson, McKillop’s team is an attacking full court offense where they are always aggressive and attack with discipline by taking a high percentage shot in transition. This system also relies on five rules of discipline which are:

Catch and see – Slows the game for the athlete and allows them to quickly find teammates, the person guarding them, and where the opponent is guarding.

Dribble with a purpose – Attack somebody or to help somebody

Offense is a fight for space - Run through your cut or pivot to create space

Finish your cut – Find a spot on the floor and get there after the cut to create great spacing and good angles

Help somebody – Learn to sacrifice – set a screen, run hard up the floor, make an extra pass.

On the court, McKillop shows these keys, objectives and rules of discipline in action by showing some of his team drills. The drills include a 2-man stretch drill, read the coach, 3-on-3 with a coach, and triangle shell drill.

Learn how to develop your team’s offensive philosophy using simple principles that can be developed and refined in your daily practice drills.

Strive to be better this season with this inspired presentation from the 2008 NABC Coach of the Year.

Steve Fisher – San Diego State

Steve Fisher’s team is known for their up-tempo style of play including attacking the rim and open three-point opportunities. In this on-court demonstration, Coach Fisher teaches you their fast-paced style of play and their half-court offense.

Shooting Drills
Coach Fisher teaches competitive shooting drills that will teach your players to move with a purpose. He demonstrates partner shooting drills to get your players shots at the top of the key, elbows, corners and three pointers.

Transition Offense
The Aztecs love to get out on the break and push the ball up the court looking to create easy shots. See how Fisher’s offense generates uncontested three-point shots in transition and easy entries into the post. Fisher details options you can use when your guard is unable to push the ball up the sidelines. He demonstrates a drag screen in transition with the bigs for a roll and replace action to space the floor.

Half-Court Offense
Coach Fisher’s offense is primarily based on two offensive sets: Shuffle and Scissors (Horns). The Shuffle Series provides a basic wing-to-block cut off of the backscreen from the post man looking for a quick basket, but in his variation he uses two separate staggered screens to free open shooters along the perimeter. Should the passes be denied on swings and reverses, Fisher reveals tactics for releasing pressure with replace and screen away options.

Also covered are numerous quick hitters and options off of the Shuffle series including isolations, ball-screens, post-up’s and special three-point looks.

The Scissors set is a Princeton variation with the two big guys at the elbows. With the use of downscreens, back cuts, and ball-screens this set provides open shot attempts seamlessly. With quick hitters and counters to the set, you can keep the defense guessing.

He begins with a favorite warm-up drill that incorporates ball handling from baseline to half court and back. All shooting drills focus on communication and good passing and are competitive in nature. The 4 plus 1 shooting series; the 2, 2, 2, and 1 shooting drill; the Fire fast break drill are some of the featured drills you’ll see. Time-tested game plays are demonstrated step-by-step. Heat is a play with multiple options and screening action. “Florida” is a play that yields a lob for a lay-up by the post. On the free throw line, the “X” stunt can produce at least one basket per game. End of the game plays can pull out big wins, and Fisher shares his “4 second play” to win the game at the buzzer. This is a great collection of team and individual drills and plays!

In this on-court demonstration, BYU Head Coach Dave Rose teaches you how he attacks opposing defenses in transition. Using this powerful system, the Cougars regularly rank amongst the top scoring teams in the nation.

Transition Offense Drills
Coach Rose gets his team to play at a very fast pace, putting the defense on their heels in transition. He begins his practices with a simple 3-man weave drill getting his team acclimated to the fast pace and getting shots off at the high speed and then builds on the weave with a 3-on-2 to 2-on-1 drill. Also included is his favorite drill (which he will use for up to 30 minutes of practice time) the “Nugget Drill.” This progression style transition drill creates a numbered break for the offense each time down the floor.

BYU’s “Basic” Transition Offense
The “Basic” Transition Offense provides various options on the break including open 3-point looks, post-ups, and cutters to the rim. In his offensive attack, Rose uses a 4-out 1-in set with the goal of getting the ball into the post for a high-percentage shot attempt. Rose also covers how to counter intense pressureusing dribble entries and pressure releases.

Q&A
Rose fields questions about his transition drills and actions. Learn what he does against teams that play zone and how he likes to create spacing on the court when the ball is passed into the post. He also gives insight to how he has organized the BYU basketball program and shaped it into one of the best in the country.

The Bears were one of only two Pac-12 teams to make the NCAA tournament in 2012 and will face South Florida in a Midwest regional first round game in Dayton on Wednesday, March 14th. The winner of the first round game will face #5 seed Temple in Nashville.

BYU will face the Iona Gaels on March 12th 2012 in Dayton. The winner will then face Marquette, the #3 seed in the West Regional.

“Dave Rose: The BYU Transition Offense”

Put the defense on their heels with this proven successful transition attack.

Rose also covers how to counter intense pressure using dribble entries and pressure releases.

Q&A
Rose fields questions about his transition drills and actions. Learn what he does against teams that play zone and how he likes to create spacing on the court when the ball is passed into the post. He also gives insight to how he has organized the BYU basketball program and shaped it into one of the best in the country.
